MEET the owner - SAVANNAH
August_21 means everything to me. Before I took over in May 2021, I was a regular, and fell in love with the space, the staff, and the potential. Now, it's not just a cafe- it's a space my staff and I work really hard every day to make safe and creative, especially for marginalised communities who are often expected to keep up in an increasingly chaotic world with little or no support.
Because of my disability, my energy levels can be unpredictable, and I've been advised that a typical paid working life isn't possible for me.
So my role at the cafe is entirely voluntary, even though I don't take a salary, and every penny goes back to the space and the staff and the community, we still struggle every month just to stay open.
By choosing to support small independent spaces, our community, who are amazing, helps keep open places like ours. Whether it's our weekly open mics, finding new ways to keep prices low or spotlighting a different indie artist each month and helping them sell their prints.
That is the kind of thing I love to do.
Because it creates a gentle sense of belonging that helps people and the whole community grow and bond together. The main thing that I want for August_21 is to be a place where people feel seen, but also unconditionally accepted as they are when they walk in. I think that's the whole point.
And I think we're doing it.
